Egan Maritime Institute

The Egan Maritime Institute, the island’s only organization dedicated to maintaining the maritime traditions of Nantucket, seeks a dynamic, experienced, forward-looking executive director who will welcome the challenge of implementing an ambitious strategic plan. The new executive director will join staff and trustees eager to move the institute forward to provide new, meaningful programming for Nantucketers. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the executive director leads a staff of two full-time employees, fourteen part-time employees and some volunteers. He/she provides interpretive direction for programs and exhibitions in the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum and for Mill Hill Press books. He/she manages the Institute’s financial, human and physical resources and represents the Institute (and its affiliates) to donors, partners and the community. Experience in non-profit work, fundraising for annual, capital and planned gifts, staff supervision and financial management is essential. The successful candidate should be comfortable working hard with measurable goals established by the Trustees; have the ability to work with task-oriented teams composed of staff, board members and community representatives; and possess the ability to lead/coach staff to achieve their respective goals. He/she will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be completely comfortable with using social media and with website development and maintenance.
