Programs

Working with on-island and off-island organizations, the Egan Maritime Institute presents a calendar of events that includes lectures, films, concerts and symposia focusing on Nantucket and other maritime topics. Additionally, Egan Maritime makes space available at the Coffin School to community groups upon request for a modest fee.

In July and August 2011, the Artists Association will mount an exhibit of paintings and artifacts from their permanent collection.

Nantucket Community Sailing is located in the lower level of the Coffin School and offers sailing courses at a reasonable cost. Together, Nantucket Community Sailing and Egan Maritime co-sponsor the Admiral’s Cup, an annual dinghy race, and the Whaleboat Rowing Club.

Relive history aboard the Wanderer, an authentic reproduction of an original whaleboat. Learn the skills of the whalers, get great exercise, and enjoy the camaraderie of the team.

Ever wonder what it was really like to row after a whale? By training aboard the Wanderer, sailors of today get a one-of-a-kind experience that is physical, educational and fun. All are welcome, from novice to experienced mariners. The program combines history with exercise as rowers learn the methods employed by whalers of old, while plying the waters of Nantucket Harbor. The emphasis is on teamwork, as five rowers are required to pull together in a cooperative effort.

About the Wanderer Whaleboat

The Wanderer is a double-ended rowing and sailing boat built to the exact specifications as those used aboard American whaleships in the mid-nineteenth century. Ranging between 24 and 30 feet long, whaleboats were extremely seaworthy and could easily be rowed by a five-man crew. Although the whaleboat in its time was one of the most extensively built boats in history, very few original boats exist today except in museums. The Beetle whaleboat, built by Charles Beetle of New Bedford during the mid-1800s, is characterized by the curvature of the stern and bow chock construction. Built specifically for the sperm fishery, the Beetle whaleboat is 29 feet long and weighs 1,200 pounds. An original Beetle whaleboat can be seen in the Nantucket Whaling Museum. The Wanderer was built expressly for Sue and Jim Genthner by Christopher Emerson of Emerson Boatworks in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, from plans originally drafted by Charles Beetle.

Now in its fifth year, the Nantucket Whaleboat Rowing Club meets during the summer months at Jetties Beach. Rowing times are agreed upon by club members. For more information, please call Egan Maritime at (508) 228-2505.

26-foot Monomoy-Style Surfboat

In August 2011, the surfboat below was acquired from the Cape May Maritime Museum when it became available on eBay.  Click on the image below to read all about this restoration project by Captain Connor Wallace with oversight by boat builder Alfred Sanford III and EMI trustee Eric Holch. The team is working hard to re-launch the surfboat in Nantucket Harbor this summer and to offer rowing and sailing opportunities during the season.

ACK Weather – Real Nantucket Weather

ACKweather is the innovation of EMI trustee Eric Holch who recognized that weather on Nantucket is unique.  Whether you are a traveler to and from the island, a scalloper or fisherman or a sailor or boater or simply want to enjoy Nantucket’s marvelous beaches, it is essential that you make your plans with the best weather information available.  ACKweather also provides boat and plane schedules (with a hot-line for reservations) and other essential telephone numbers for your personal safety, all in one place.  Started as a website in 2011, an app was developed for iPhones. Since its launching, both the site and the app are used by thousands of people each month. ACKweather is brought to you by the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum.
